I'm pretty bad at knowing general directions when I'm traveling so thought having a compass would help get my shit together a little better. Rather than having a fancy land-nav quality compass I just wanted something basic that still worked well. I first pondered some cheezy clip-on compasses, which probably wouldn't have done the "worked well" feature, then luckily saw this SERE wrist compass. Having it wear like a watch totally makes sense for ease of use while being mobile on foot or just in a vehicle. I'll have to admit, out of the box it feels a little dinky. Most of the parts are plastic based so it doesn't have a metal watch quality feel to it, but functionality wise it works well and barely weighs anything. The band is actually pretty nice made with quality webbing and what appears to be laser burned holes. If you want to get sassy you can combine it with other watches that work with 16mm straps so one can have a watch and compass on the same band.

Although called a SERE watch, it should be noted the moving pieces aren't inside a liquid or anything so can wobble and make noise during heavy movement. Fortunately if you are hauling ass, the compass noise is less than the rukus one makes running. When quickly changing directions the compass can get in a pendulum like mode that isn't very useful. When this occurs I angle it till the disk touches the case then slowly angle back to settle things down. The Maraglo markings work great. Usually environment light is enough to make it visible at night, but if you want to get it to super glow you can charge it with your flashlight for a moment and get quick results.

Despite the lightweight materials making this compass feel cheaper than it is, the specs claim it can take a good beating. Thus my next test is to see long term durability. I'm interested in seeing scratch resistance and if functionality degrades if I wear while running for a good period of time. Will keep you updated.
